Malaysia aims for one boxing gold at December SEA GameS

PENANG: Malaysia are targeting one gold medal from the boxers at the Korat SEA Games in December.

Malaysia Amateur Boxing Federation (MABF) vice president Major (R) Wan Abdul Hamid Wan Mohd said the gold was expected through either Zamzai Azizi Mohamed (48kg) or Mohd Farhan Harun (64kg).

Zamzai, 27, is a seasoned campaigner who won a bronze in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games.

Mohd Farhan, he is a promising boxer who started to shine in both local and international competitions recently.

Wan Abdul Hamid singled out Indonesia, Thailand and Phillipines as the teams to beat during the biannual Games.

Besides Zamzai and Mohd Farhan, two others who have more or less sealed their tickets to the Games were Eddey Kalai and Paunandes Paulus.

Wan Abdul Hamid, who was speaking during the 7th Malaysia National Boxing Championships in Penang here on Tuesday, added that three other boxers will be selected from the on-going championships.

The Korat SEA Games is scheduled from Dec 6-15.

At the on-going championships at the Pesta site, Sungai Nibong here, a total of 111 boxers representing 16 teams are battling for honours in nine categories.

State executive councillor Syed Amerrudin Syed Ahmad, representing Penang Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, launched the opening on Tuesday.
