M'sian Golfers For Korat Games To Be Named After Two Overseas Meets

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- A two-week stint in Perth, Australia, and two overseas championships will decide the squad of Malaysian golfers for the Korat SEA Games in December.

National Sports Counci's manager of the Elite Athlete Programme for golf Joherman Amir said the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) had shortlisted six prominent amateur golfers from the programme to form the preliminary SEA Games team.

"But, the final squad for the biennial event will only comprise four golfers. So, two will be dropped after the association evaluates their performances in the two tournaments," he told Bernama here Thursday.

The six golfers are Edmund Au, Akhmal Tarmizi Mohd Nazari, Mohd Amli Mohiyaddedn, Hilmi Abd Rahman, Andy Gan Shien Loong and Haziq Hamizan.

Joherman said that before taking part in the Nomura Cup in Taiwan (Oct 2-5) and Putra Cup in Manila, Phillippines (Nov 27-Dec 2), the golfers would have a two-week stint at Joondalup Golf Resort in Perth, Australia.

In Perth, from Sept 14 to 23, they would work on sharpening their skills before the tournaments, he said.

The first time Malaysian golfers took part in SEA Games was in 1989 in Kuala Lumpur where they won a gold, silver and bronze. They repeated the feat in 1993 in Singapore.

However, in the previous two editions -- Vietnam (2003) and Phillippines (2005) -- Malaysia failed to win any medals.
