Malaysian Women Bowlers Continue Winning Ways

BANGKOK, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysian women keglers won the gold while the men only managed the silver in the fives (five bowlers in a team) events held at the SF Strike Bowl in Ramkhamhaeng here today.

Esther Cheah, Zatil Iman Abd Ghani, Siti Safiyyah Amirah Abdul Rahman, Sharon Koh Suet Len and Shalin Zulkifli downed 5723 pinfalls to clinch the gold medal while the Indonesian team with 5612 pinfalls took the silver and Thailand the bronze (5604 pinfalls).

"It was really a tense six-game competition. Despite the pressure and taunts from the home supporters, the girls performed beyond expectations to win," Malaysia's national coach Holloway Cheah told reporters.

However, the men - Daniel Lim Tow Chuang, Zul Mazran Zulkifli, Alex Liew Kien Liang, Adrian Ang Hsien Loong and Aaron Kong Eng Chuan - missed the gold by 20 pinfalls. They downed a total of 5812 pins while Thailand, who won the gold, hit 5832.

The bronze was won by Indonesia (5690 pins).

"They did well in the early games. However, they lost focus in the later games and gave Thailand the advantage," said Holloway.

With the latest result, the Malaysian bowling squad have won 3 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze. The other two gold were also contributed by the women bowlers - in the doubles and trios events.

Tomorrow, the men's and women's masters events will start with the 1st block while the final will be held on Thursday.
