Spot On Chu Sian Captures Recurve Gold In All-Malaysian Final

KORAT, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- Cheng Chu Sian shot a perfect 10 in an exciting one-arrow play-off to beat team-mate Mohd Khalmizan Wan Abdul Malik for the gold in the men's Recurve final at the Suranaree University of Technology here today.

Chu Sian and Khalmizan who marched into the final after beating their respective opponents from the Philippines and Indonesia respectively, were tied on 110 points after regular play, forcing a one-arrow play-off.

In the play-off, Chu Sian hit the bulls eye for a 10 while Khalmizan managed only eight points to concede the gold.

In the semi-finals held in the morning, Chu Sian beat Mark Javier 108-103 while Khalmizan triumphed over Hendro Suprianto 108-101.

According to archery team manager Mohammad Yazid Ahmad, both players were in superb form today and that the final was a very exciting and close affair.

"Tomorrow we will be involved in the men's and women's Recurve team events and the men's Compound. Based on current form, we have a very good chance of winning the gold medal, especially in the men's Recurve team.

"We have targetted two gold medals from archery and that target is on track," he told Bernama after today's events.

In the men's Recurve team event, Malaysia who beat Laos 217-168 in the quarter-finals earlier face Myanmar while the women's team who had also beaten Laos 191-167, face Vietnam.

Malaysia will face either Indonesia or the Philippines in the men's while the women will be up against the winner of the tie between Indonesia and Thailand.

The Compound men's event will see Malaysia take on Vietnam after beating their quarter-finals opponent, Thailand in a three-arrow play-off (28-27) after both teams were tied on 213 points.

The other semi-final pitches Indonesia against Singapore.
