Men Shoot Down Recurve Gold But Women Miss Target

KORAT, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- Cheng Chu Sian, Mohd Khalmizan Wan Abdul Malik and Muhammad Marbawi Sulaiman lived up to their top billing by shooting down the Recurve Team gold but the women's team had to be contented with a silver in the same event at the Suranaree University of Technology here Wednesday.

The Malaysian trio beat Indonesia's Mohamed Ali Sofian, Rahmat Sulistyawan, Hendro Suprianto 213-211 in the final after having beaten Myanmar 218-208 in the semi-finals held in the morning.

However, the women's cast, headed by Anbarasi Subramaniam, Irza Hanie Abdul Samah and Nor Aziera Taip lost 198-204 to concede the gold to a superior Indonesian trio headed by Recurve Individual gold medallist Ika Yuliana, silver medal winner Puspitasari Rina Dewi and Gina Rahayu Sugiharti.

With the team gold and the men's Individual Recurve gold won by Chu Sian earlier, the archery team wrapped up their competitions which ended here today with 2 gold, 2 silver and a bronze.

"We were quite sure of winning the men's gold but knew that beating Indonesia would be a difficult task, especially after their top two archers had shown superb form by winning the gold and silver in the Individual event.

"We targetted two gold and I'm happy to have achieved that target. Though we won three gold medals at the 2005 SEA Games in Manila through the Compound events, this time around the Compound team members are new," said team manager Mohammad Yazid Ahmad.

In the men's event, the Philippines beat Myanmar 208-205 to win the bronze while Thailand edged Vietnam 198-197 for the bronze.

Archery was the first team to have achieved their projected target for the Korat SEA Games.

Meanwhile, the men's Compound team comprising Lau Siew Hong, Soo Teck Kim and Ting Leong Fong beat Singapore 217-212 to take the bronze behind Vietnam and Indonesia who won the gold and silver respectively.
