Now, singles shuttler Chun Seang is hurt

MISFORTUNE continued to hit the Malaysian badminton squad with Tan Chun Seang becoming a doubtful starter for the team competition, which begins today at the Gymnasium Vongchavalitkul University in Korat.

The top national back-up singles player, who will feature for Malaysia in both the team and individual events, has picked up a wrist injury.

And coach Rashid Sidek is contemplating on replacing Chun Seang with Kuan Beng Hong in the individual event.

“What can I say? It is one problem after another for the Malaysian team,” said Rashid.

“I do not know whether Chun Seang is nervous or overly excited. He picked up this pain on his wrist during training just before arriving here. If necessary, I will replace him with Beng Hong.”

The other two men’s singles players in the team are Yeoh Kay Bin and Chan Kwong Beng. The doubles players are Gan Teik Chai, Lin Woon Fui, Mohd Razif Abdul Latif, Khoo Chung Chiat and Tan Wee Kiong.

The Malaysian team had been dealt two severe blows with the exit of their top women’s singles player Wong Mew Choo and doubles specialist Chin Eei Hui because of injuries.

In today’s opening ties, the men will be up against Cambodia while the top seeded women’s team have a first-round bye.
